The first apartment in Pilsen designed by Adolf Loos was located in the Neo-Renaissance home of Vilém and Marta Hirsch. In 1907, Adolf Loos designed a luxurious apartment for this newly-married couple, taking up the entire first floor of the house. Twenty years later, Loos extended the apartment even more, adding a small extension to the porch. In addition, he designed a bachelor’s apartment for the young Richard Hirsch, son of Vilém and Marta, on the second floor. Unfortunately, only a few fragments of the original apartment on the first floor survived. However, nearly all of Richard’s bedroom from 1927 was preserved, including the characteristic built-in wardrobes. Loos used a combination of green-painted wardrobe frames with orient-themed wallpaper on the wardrobe door. In 2015, the original furniture was completely restored. In the 1980s, the furniture from the adjoined lounge was taken away by a private collector, and today it can be found in a new location in Prague. Interestingly, two rare portraits of Vilém and Marta Hirsch, painted by Oskar Kokoschka, survived and are now part of gallery collections in Berlin and New York.
