The Kraus and Vogl Apartments
10 Bendova Street and 12 Klatovska Street

The guided tour starts at 10 Klatovska Street, and continues to the neighbouring apartment at Klatovska 12, which once belonged to Dr. Vogl. These two buildings had already been connected during World War II in order to create a municipal office. They have been used for this same purpose up until now, albeit a few small changes. Today, only two rooms have miraculously survived – the living room with replicas of the original furniture and the dining room, whose walls were covered with travertine. These two rooms create a harsh contrast to the area of small offices into which the original apartments were transformed. After visiting the apartment at 12 Klatovska Street, you will take a short 8-minute walk to see the next interior, which is situated at 10 Bendova Street, inside the former apartment of the Kraus family. According to the opinions of many experts, it is here in the former Kraus family apartment that visitors can see the most beautiful lounge designed by Adolf Loos. The walls are covered with Swiss Cipollino marble, and the ceiling is decorated with dark mahogany wood. The guided tour also includes other parts of the apartment, featuring a former bathroom, Mr Kraus’ study and its amazing wallpaper, a comfortably furnished bedroom with built-in furniture, as well as the maid’s room and its original floor of red-painted, wooden boards. During the guided tour, visitors will also learn about the life stories of the Pilsen families for whom Adolf Loos designed a number of luxurious interiors on and around Klatovska Street.

The Brummel House
58 Husova Street

This guided tour is focused on the reconstructed building of the original one-storey home. This building and its historical façade were changed into a two-generation home for Mr and Mrs Brummel and Mrs Brummel’s mother, Mrs Hedvika Liebstein. The tour begins in the area of the hall, which hides a staircase whose design draws inspiration from the Goethe’s house in Weimar. Moving on, visitors will see a corridor, which includes the food preparation area, a bedroom with Loos’ typical built-in furniture made of cherry wood, and a spacious bathroom located behind the bedroom. Through another small corridor visitors are led to the living room, which features a monumental fire place as well as a terrace with a view over the small back garden. The other rooms are connected in a so-called “enfilade” layout – namely the dining room and yellow lounge, which includes the bedroom of Mrs Liebstein.

The Semler Residence

The guided tour of the Semler Residence takes its visitors into a unique interior designed by Adolf Loos. In this home, Loos implemented the principle of Raumplan. Heinrich Kulka, who was a colleague and student of Adolf Loos, created the interiors for Oskar and Jana Semler based on Loos’ concept. The home was transferred as property of the City of Pilsen to the Pilsen Region, and now it’s managed by the Gallery of West Bohemia. The Semler Residence, included the formally inaccessible private areas of the apartment (i.e., the bedrooms and children’s rooms), was reopened in September 2022 to the public after its expansive renovations. The newly-built Centre for Research of Pilsen Region Architecture is now part of the Oskar Semler residence exposition.

The apartment of Hugo Semler and the suite of Richard Hirsch
Klatovská 19 and Plachého 6

The tour of two Loos interiors that up until now were waiting to be renovated begins at Klatovská 19 at the home of Hugo Semler. In the expansive flat on the first floor of businessman Hugo Semler’s home, the dining room, salon, and music room dating back to the years 1931-1932 have survived to this day. The music room itself is an example of Loos’ work, whereas the other two spaces were created in Loos’ style. Towards the end of the Second World War, the interior was used as a workroom by the military commander of Pilsen, Georg Von Majewski, who shot himself here after his surrender in 1945. From the end of the war until 2002, the home and its interior were used by the army. Currently, the home is usually inaccessible, as an expansive renovation project of the entire building is in the works.

Loos’ first redesigned apartment in Pilsen was located inside the Neo-Renaissance home of Vilém and Marta Hirsch at Plachého 6. His work was finished in 1907, leaving the apartment with a particularly luxurious style, which took up the entire first floor. 20 years later, Adolf Loos expanded the apartment even more and added a small courtyard addition of a veranda. He also designed the bachelor’s apartment on the second floor for the Hirschs’ son Richard. Unfortunately, all that remained of the first floor was the cross-beamed ceiling. In 2012, however, The Department of Monument Care of the City of Pilsen was successful in discovering Richard’s previously forgotten, nearly completely saved bedroom from 1927, which included its characteristic built-in wardrobes. In 2015, Pilsen had the original furniture that survived completely restored. During the commentated tour, visitors will enter the bedroom as well as other parts of Richard Hirsch’s suite.

The interiors are open to public several times per year only. In 2023, the tours are planned for the followind dates: 22/4, 6/5, 26/5, 18/6, 15/7, 12/8, 19/9 and 28/10.

With regard to the public interest in the guided tours, we recommend booking or purchasing your tickets in advance. Tickets may be purchased online via our booking system or at the Tourist Information Centre at Republic Square 41 or by the Main Railway Station (open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. , Sundays until 3 p.m.).

Note:

  1. Already purchased tickets cannot be returned/exchanged, the entrance fee cannot be refunded.
  2. Any unauthorized changes made to a ticket will render it invalid.
  3. The tickets for the Adolf Loos Pilsen guided tours are sold only by the employees of the Tourist Information Centre. No other location provides the possibility to purchase or pick up already purchased tickets.
  4. The capacity of the individual guided tours is set by the booking system.
  5. When attempting to apply a reduced price for an entrance ticket, visitors are expected to provide any document necessary to justify the discount prior to the beginning of the tour.
  6. Ticket reservations made in cash at the Tourist Information Centre are valid for 48 hours, after which the tickets are returned to the booking system, and they may be purchased again. You may not reserve tickets over the internet if the period before your scheduled tour is shorter than 7 days.
  7. Reservations are valid for 5 days if payment is sent via bank transfer. If payment is not received within this period, the tickets will be returned to the booking system, and they may be purchased again. For this type of payment, you may not reserve tickets if the period before your scheduled tour is shorter than 5 days.
  8. Reservations made via an online payment are only valid for 2 hours. If payment does not arrive within this period, the tickets will be returned to the booking system, and they may be purchased again. You may not reserve tickets online if the period before your scheduled tour is shorter than 2 hours.
